Dear 3E1,

I hope you all are enjoying your holidays. It has been a great (3/4) year with all of you. Since I have not given enough homework for all of you, here is one big SS project for your class and whoever who wants to take part from other classes.

As I have said earlier, each of you have been assigned with one SS question. Please put in your best effort in this one essay (if not more if you want to). Your essay means helping your classmates with your Sec 3 SS SEQ. If you submit a sloppy work, it will be unfair to your friends who have put in so much effort.

Once all the essays are completed (and more or less perfect), I will combine down into a package. The deadline for the submission will be 1st December 2008. Send the essay to teo_zhiliang@moe.edu.sg

How far is “good leadership” the most important guidance principle to ensure peace and prosperity in Singapore? Explain your answer.

How do we make linkages back to the question?

1) Given Factor – Why is good leadership important in ensuring peace and prosperity in Singapore? (Link)

a. The leaders of Singapore play a very important role because the fate of the country’s economic, social and political depends on them.

b. A good and honest leader will ensure that the country’s money is always accounted for and no embezzlement of the nation’s fund will take place. Singapore’s finances are allocated to different components of the country such as the tourism sector, the educational sector and the defence sector. All of them play an important part to develop Singapore into a better future. Thus, a good leader will make key monetary decisions and prioritize the hierarchy of monetary needs for the country at different contexts to guide the country to the next level.

c. A good leader is needed to ensure social cohesion as he or she will demonstrate qualities of justice and equality throughout different ethnicities, religions, genders and income groups. (S)he takes good care of the socially marginalized groups and include every citizen of Singapore a part of Singapore’s development plan.

d. A good leader ensures political stability by maintaining good relationships among different groups of individuals living in Singapore and diplomatic ties with the neighbouring countries and beyond. Thus, Singapore will win the respect of its people, its neighbours and the world.

e. Thus, we can see that good leadership cater to the different developmental aspects of the country i.e. social, economic and political components. With a good leader, the country will be well governed such that peace and prosperity will be enjoyed by its people.

2) Other Factor - Why is anticipating change important in ensuring peace and prosperity in Singapore? (Link)

a. Changes are inevitable in the life-cycle of any product. This applies to a country as well. Thus, it is important for Singapore’s government to anticipate these fluctuations and reduce the extent of uncertainties. Some of these changes are benign while others are detrimental to the peace and security of our country. It is those detrimental changes that our country needs to be prepared for.

b. Political changes might be detrimental especially due to our reliance on some countries on their resources. For instance, the relationship between Singapore and Malaysia has always been uncertain because of the changes in their political leaders. Some of them might not like Singapore and thus demand a stop in exporting water supply to us. Thus, Singapore has to take into account of this possible change in future and prepare contingency plans such as finding alternative water sources.

c. Economic changes might be detrimental as well as the globalized world means that any economy downturn in big countries such as the United States of America will mean possible recession in Singapore. Also, the Singapore economy could not be completely insulated from the regional economic turmoil, as the country has strong trade and financial linkages with the region Thus, Singapore always need to prepare for drastic changes in the world economy by maintaining a healthy banking sector which is able to absorb negative shocks in economic turmoil.

d. Anticipating positive economic change is important as well because these are economic opportunities to be tapped upon. For instance, the advent of globalization is anticipated to have led to an increase in tourism across borders. Thus, the government has aggressively promoted Singapore as a tourism destination to capture the growing market by developing integrated resorts to attract tourists.

3) Other Factor – Why is meritocracy important in ensuring peace and prosperity in Singapore? (Link)

a. Meritocracy is an important approach in maintaining peace and prosperity by reducing the likelihood of discrimination against particular groups of Singaporeans among the diverse population. Discrimination from the government and the people towards groups of people often led to conflicts as the marginalized groups will be unhappy with the unfair treatment. Thus, meritocracy is carried out through the principle of “Work for Reward and Reward for Work” which gives everybody in society an equal opportunity to achieve their best and be rewarded for their performance, regardless of race, religion, gender or socio-economic background. At such, the diverse groups of people living in Singapore will not create trouble similar to those in Northern Ireland and Sri Lanka where discrimination is overtly practised.

wooo. we went to do the class T today. the price increased cause we did polo dry-fit. Add 2 dollars and the confirmed price is 21.70. sorry about the changes and you need to pay around 2 dollars more. When we get back the change then we'll return each of you 30 cents.

For the names right, the person say if we want individual names we need to pay another $8 more which is very expensive. so see whether you all still want it or not.

We've adjust the size of the shirt for you cause some of it are actually quite big.
